Youth Empowerment News

We are pleased to announce David Burrowes MP as our newest Patron. Mr Burrowes is particularly interested in the policy areas of drugs and alcohol, the criminal justice system, family policy and the voluntary sector which complement the aims and objectives of the Youth Empowerment Crime Diversion Scheme. David joins our existing prestigious panel of Patrons, Lord Ramsbotham and Jonathon Lord MP. Our Patrons are extremely proactive in their support of the scheme by offering advice and guidance on a regular basis. The Scheme Operational Manager Graham Godden and Fundraising and Development Manager, Fiona Medley meet with parliamentary Patrons on a quarterly basis at the House of Commons. Agenda topics include progress reports, policy reviews and avenues of development within the criminal justice system.
Jonathon Lord MP has kindly and generously proposed the hosting of an event at the banqueting halls at the House of Commons to raise the profile of the Youth Empowerment Crime Diversion Scheme. This event is planned for November 2011.
Lord Ramsbotham was Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales from December 1995 to December 2001. On March 2005 it was announced that he was to be elevated to a life peerage. He sits in the House of Lords as a crossbencher.

Fundraising
The Trustees of Youth Empowerment are extremely pleased to announce that the scheme has secured substantial funding from Lankelly Chase, Peter Stebbings Memorial Charity and Tudor Trust.
This funding had put the scheme on a secure footing and will enable Trustees to employ a new ex-offender lead facilitator and further ex-offender sessional workers. It will also enable the scheme to access more young people and roll out the service to other areas in the south east region.

The Trustees of Youth Empowerment are very pleased to announce a large injection of funds from The Big Lottery: Reaching Communities. The scheme has been awarded £120k over three years which will support the development and expansion of the scheme. This will enable us to reach more young people and ex-offenders. » Read more

Following our successful pilot with Sussex Police in the summer where Youth Empowerment delivered a group work programme to young people. We plan to mirror our successful working partnerships which have proved effective in other areas. We are extremely excited and proud to be opening up our services to more young people. This expansion has been further supported by the recent funding successes of the scheme which have enabled the Trustees to employ an experienced lead facilitator who is Sussex based.

The scheme development and expansion has led to the need for further job roles to be developed including a Finance Officer – we will be announcing our new member of staff soon.
Operational Manager Graham Godden and Fundraising and Development Manager Fiona Medley are attending the Criminal Justice Management Conference on 29th September 2011 which will bring together key decision makers from the Home Office, Ministry of Justice and Voluntary and Community Sectors. We see this as a further opportunity to promote our service and utilise networking opportunities.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved with the scheme at all levels for their support, advice and guidance which has ensured our success and development. This has enabled us to reach and provide support to more young people and more ex-offenders. We are looking forward to future development of the scheme and reporting progress.

The Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust (RAPt) has invited the Youth Empowerment Crime Diversion Scheme to enter a working partnership which supports our common aims. Following a meeting with Youth Empowerment Managers, founding Trustee Lady Louise Gibbings and CEO Mike Trace it has been agreed that RAPt will support Youth Empowerment. This will be in areas such as training programmes promoting volunteers and employment positions within Youth Empowerment for RAPt graduates interested in working with young people. Further, they have kindly offered to support our fundraising efforts and PR and Marketing. We are also exploring a joint approach to delivering early intervention drug programmes to young people. The most recent initiative is a joint grant application for an early intervention drugs programme to the Home Office.

An exciting event re-scheduled for 15th February 2012 is the Youth Empowerment Crime Diversion Scheme Charity Lunch at The Clink Restaurant, HMP Highdown. This event is kindly and generously sponsored by Kevin McGrath of the McGrath Trust following a successful meeting with him and Youth Empowerment Managers.
This will follow on from our promotional and awareness raising event at the House of Commons supported by one of our Patrons Jonathon Lord MP. We are grateful for support in these events which continue to highlight the vital role of Youth Empowerment in diverting young people from crime and supporting prisoner rehabilitation.
These initiatives are early evidence of ‘The Big Society’ in action alongside the ’Rehabilitation Revolution’.
Operations
Since the scheme became operational in Aug 2009 Youth Empowerment has worked with 3,250 young people from 100 different organisations. We have given employment and training opportunities to 11 ex-offenders.
The Youth Empowerment Chair of Trustees Jackie Malton said that ‘it is extremely encouraging to report growth in all areas of our strategic aims’.
